Menopause Symptoms. Your Questions Answered by Internal Specialist, Dr. Mera

I am 50 years old and still taking the contraceptive pill. How will I know when I have my change of life?

It is possible for the periods to continue long after the menopause if you continue to take the contraceptive pill. There are two ways to find out whether you still need contraceptive cover. (1) You can stop the pill, use alternative forms of birth control (eg. condoms), and see if the periods return in the next six months. During that time your doctor can take blood tests to assess yout hotmone status. (2) These tests can be done while you are still on the pill, but they are less reliable and harder to interpret. “Women over 40 who continue to take the pill should ensure that they are on the lowest possible dose, and should not smoke, as this will greatly increase the risk factors.
