Food Sensitivity. Your Questions Answered by Internal Specialist, Dr Mera

I am a 25 year old female who eats a relatively healthy diet and takes regular exercise to keep myself in shape. I suffer periodically with stomach bloating which can last for days at a time causing me discomfort and embarrassment. Food diaries have not been any help, can you give me some advice?

Living quite happily in your Gastrointestinal tract (GI) are trillions of bacteria, most having a positive effect on your health. When they are invaded by harmful bacteria an imbalance called dysbiosis is caused, very common symptoms being excessive bloating and abdominal pain.
Other symptoms are diarrhoea, constipation, excessive gas, nausea and fatigue. If you suffer with food sensitivities to gluten, sugar, eggs, soy, corn, nuts and dairy these can trigger dysbiosis to occur.
Unlike a food allergy where the reaction usually occurs within minutes, the symptoms can be delayed for a few days. Many people who suffer food sensitivities can go a lifetime without ever knowing they have one due to delayed reaction times.
Speak with your GP as a simple blood or stool test can help diagnose your problem.
