Diabetes, Foot Problems. Your Questions Answered by Internal Specialist, Dr Mera
I am Diabetic and tend to suffer with sores on my feet and re-current skin and nail infections. I find
it difficult to treat myself and the condition is becoming worse, what advice can you give me
please?
Firstly, it is extremely important to seek professional advice from your GP so you can make the necessary
tests and be monitored as this could be the beginning of a life-threatening condition. Most foot
problems due to diabetes can be prevented with good, regular foot care by a specialist.
Having diabetes means you are at an increased risk of developing foot problems. This is because
raised blood glucose can damage the sensation in your feet, affecting your circulation, which can lead
to a lack of blood supply to your feet. Without a good blood supply you may suffer with cramps and
pains in the leg área and have problems with the healing of cuts and sores.
Visit a Podiatrist/Chiropodist who specialises in Diabetes for regular monthly check-ups to treat
and monitor these problems as if left untreated foot ulcers, further infections could develop and in
extreme cases amputation necessary.
